Chances of survival remain bleak: Telangana Minister Jupally Krishna Rao said that the chances of survival of the eight persons are “very remote”, though every effort is being made to reach them, news agency PTI reported. According to the minister, rescuing the trapped individuals would take at least three to four days, as the site of the collapse is filled with muck and debris, making it a “daunting task for the rescuers”,

Rescue efforts so far: A massive rescue operation has been underway, which involves around 300 trained personnel, including 128 from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 120 from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), 23 from Singareni Collieries and 24 from the Army, to bring the trapped men out. While rescuers have reached over 13 km inside the tunnel, the water and slush in the next few hundred metres have prevented the rescuers from getting to the trapped men. A team of rat miners – who had been deployed for the  Silkyara tunnel rescue in Uttarakhand – have been included in the rescue team to extricate the workers trapped under the collapsed portion of the tunnel.

Telangana Tunnel Collapse Rescue Live Updates: Why the tunnel collapsed?

According to 10 teams of engineering experts who examined the SLBC tunnel in Nagarkurnool, Telangana where eight men remain trapped, the collapse happened because of an unexpected mudslide. An expert told the Indian Express, "The seepage of water into the tunnel has caused a mudslide because of which the roof caved". The experts are cautious with the rescue because they have not ruled out the possibility of mudslide striking the tunnel again.

Nagar Kurnool District SP, Vaibhav Gaikwad told The Indian Express Tuesday that no contact could be established with the eight men trapped inside. "As of now, the rescue teams are trying to clear the path for the locomotive to reach the spot of the mishap. There are challenges in operating heavy machines to clear the mud at that place although a bulldozer has been pressed into service there. Dewatering is going on continuously. They are removing whatever debris they can. Removing parts of the twisted and mangled tunnel boring machine is proving to be a challenging task," Gaikwad said. Officials said that reaching the front portion of the boring machine is the key as that is where the eight persons are likely to be trapped but it is proving to be very difficult as it is covered with a thick layer of mud and debris.

Telangana Tunnel Collapse Rescue Live Updates: 'Drilling from above or the sides ruled out, lot of water and slush inside,' says a senior state govt official

Drilling from the above and sides of the tunnel has been ruled out, with the top surface being 400 metres in height, a senior Telangana government official said. They further said that the the Army, NDRF, SDRF and NHIDC teams were working in coordination, but they did not know where the fault lines lie.

"The team is able to reach  the last point but there is a lot of water and slush. We are still trying to figure out what should be done. In the regular course also, about 3500 litres of water is inside the tunnel. It is common and nothing new," the official said, adding that the silt from the tunnel collapse was making it difficult to operate.

"The tunnel boring machine (TBM) got broken about 50 metres from the end of the tunnel. So the team could reach till there. We are still hopeful. we will keep trying...Uttarakhand (Silkyara Bend–Barkot tunnel) was a different case. The accessibility issue was only 200 metres. Firstly, a proboscope was sent inside and then food etc was sent. Here, the location is 14 kms inside. We have sent rat miners inside. lets see what they have to say once they come outside," the official said.

Telangana Tunnel Collapse Rescue Live Updates: Situation critical inside tunnel

Sources said that the situation inside the tunnel, especially near the mishap site, has turned critical with heavy water seepage overnight.

Measures are being taken to prevent waterlogging, and alternative solutions are being explored to clear the mud and debris inside the tunnel, an official said.  The natural rock formations in the tunnel have become loose which have caused sudden water and mud inflow. Given the terrain, officials are finding it difficult to bring in heavy machinery to the tunnel to remove the debris.

Telangana Tunnel Collapse Rescue Live Updates: 'Can't use too many excavators,' says senior official

A senior official leading the operation at Domalapenta told The Indian Express, "The engineering company and the engineers have to strengthen the tunnel roof for a certain stretch. They have to clear debris upto 6m height on the tunnel boring machine. People have to dig through the muck and bring the debris out for a stretch of 14 km till the mouth of the tunnel on the conveyor belt. A small excavator has to be taken in and we can't use too many excavators due to the space constraints. It is a strenuous operation involving a lot of physical labour and long hours. Dewatering is being done and silt is being taken out. A lot of people are going in and working for a few hours and coming out. We have to restore the ventilation system till the end even though it is working fine to some extent. It is a very challenging task and we would like to finish as soon as possible, but given the conditions it looks difficult."

Telangana Tunnel Collapse Rescue Live Updates: Additional heavy duty water pumps added

The multi-disciplinary NDRF team, which is involved in rescue efforts in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool in which eight men are trapped, has sought additional heavy duty water pumps as more water and slush has seeped into the tunnel near the mishap spot since Sunday.

It has been over 48 hours now since a portion of the tunnel collapsed, and there is no sign of the eight trapped men and no rescue team has been able to establish communication with them.

The NDRF teams which were very close to the spot in the tunnel where the eight persons are believed to be trapped after a portion of the ceiling collapsed on Saturday morning found heavy water seepage and falling rocks forcing them to withdraw. They encountered waist deep water in parts of the tunnel between the 11th and 13th km overnight and early morning Monday.

Telangana Tunnel Collapse Rescue Live Updates: Huge pile of debris, muck affect rescue ops

Despite relentless efforts by the Indian Army, NDRF and other agencies, no breakthrough was achieved on Sunday in the rescue operations to extricate eight persons who have remained trapped for over 30 hours inside a tunnel after a section of it collapsed in the SLBC project, with prayers on for their well-being.

Telangana Minister J Krishna Rao told reporters that the chances of survival under the circumstances are "not that good." "Muck has piled up too high inside the tunnel, making it impossible to walk through. They (rescuers) are using rubber tubes and wooden planks to navigate through it," Krishna Rao, who went inside the tunnel, told reporters.

"We can't say. We are hopeful, but the kind of incident that took place was very serious and chances are we can not say. The chances of survival we can not predict. Chancer are not that good," he said when asked about the chances of survival of the trapped persons. (PTI)

Telangana Tunnel Collapse Rescue Live Updates: Chances of survival of workers 'very remote'

The chances of survival of the eight persons who remain trapped in the SLBC tunnel after a partial collapse two days ago are "very remote," though every effort is being made to reach them, Telangana Minister Jupally Krishna Rao said on Monday.

He also mentioned that a team of rat miners, who had rescued the construction workers trapped in the Silkyara Bend-Barkot tunnel in Uttarakhand in 2023, has joined the rescue teams to extricate the men.

The Minister stated that rescuing the trapped individuals would take at least three to four days, as the accident site is filled with muck and debris, making it a daunting task for the rescuers.

"To be honest, the chances of their survival are very, very, very, very remote. Because, I myself went up to the end, almost just 50 meters short (of the mishap site). When we took photographs, the end (of the tunnel) was visible. And out of the 9 meter diameter (of the tunnel)--almost 30 feet, out of that 30 feet, mud has piled up up to 25 feet", he told PTI.

"When we shouted their names also, there was no response...so, there is no chance at all," he said. (PTI)
