The Agripada police have arrested an engineer and a site supervisor on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder after an incident in Byculla left two labourers dead and three others injured.

The accident took place on November 15 at Habib Mansion (West) during foundation and piling work, when a portion of soil and mud caved in, burying five labourers inside a 15-foot-deep excavation pit.
The deceased have been identified as Rahul (30) and Raju (28). The injured Sajjad Ali (25), Sobat Ali (28), and Lal Mohammad (18), are stable and are being treated at Nair Hospital.

The arrested accused, Afjal Qaisar Shaikh (39), an engineer, and Shahid Salim Aagwan (32), the site supervisor, were taken into custody on Sunday. They were produced in court on Monday and remanded to judicial custody.

Following the incident, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a stop-work notice to the developer, Ibrahim Jusub Supariwala, for carrying out excavation without adequate safety measures.

Police said the workers were using jackhammers inside the pit when a wall of loose mud and stones collapsed. Fellow labourers rushed to rescue them, taking around half an hour to extricate all five from the debris.

An FIR has been registered against the engineer and the site supervisor under sections related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, among other charges. Further investigation is underway.
