Three days after he fell into an abandoned borewell in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirapalli district, two-year-old Sujith Wilson Monday passed away, reported news agency PTI. The Tamil Nadu Commissioner of Revenue Administration said his body was “dismembered” and in a “highly decomposed” state.
Officials had suspended rescue operations on Monday night after authorities confirmed that the child had passed away. His body was retrieved this morning and the final rites were performed at the Fathima Pudur cemetery near Trichy.
“We have been told that the body is in a highly decomposed state… we have suspended the digging operation,” Radhakrishnan said.

Sujith had fallen into the 600-feet abandoned well at around 5.30 pm on Friday evening in Nadukattupatti near Manapparai while playing close to the site. Central and state agencies were working around the clock to rescue him.

A foul smell was reportedly observed around 10.30 pm Monday, following which officials confirmed the death of the child.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had tweeted Monday, “My prayers are with the young and brave Sujith Wilson. Spoke to CM regarding the rescue efforts underway to save Sujith. Every effort is being made to ensure that he is safe.”
Chief Minister Edapaddi K Palaniswami had also assured all help to the family. He announced a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh from the Chief Minister’s relief fund and a sum of Rs. 10 lakh from AIADMK to the family.
