An encounter between security forces and terrorists had broken out early Thursday morning in the Singhpora area of Chatroo. Police sources said a group of 3-4 militants from Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) is believed to be trapped in the area, following a joint cordon-and-search operation by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Indian Army, and paramilitary forces.
The operation was launched after what authorities described as “precise intelligence input” provided by the local police. The terrorists are believed to be same group involved in a series of killings including a Junior Commissioned Officer of the Army and two village defence guards in Chatroo in November last year.
They, sources believed, had fled after police and security forces had on April 11 this year, killed one of the terrorists after a fierce encounter that lasted for over 48 hours. Though the identity of the slain terrorist could not be ascertained, he was suspected to be a foreigner.
Since last year, the security forces and the police are relentlessly carrying out combing and search operations in dense forests of Chatroo and adjoining areas to track down and neutralise terrorists hiding in the area.
