Several areas in Srinagar observed a shutdown on Monday to protest the death of a 16-year-old boy in clashes with the police, even as authorities suspended an assistance sub-inspector for acting in a ‘negligent and careless manner.

Shops in many areas remained closed and residents took to streets to protest the killing of Wamik Farooq. They pelted stones at policemen deployed in the area where tension was palpable after yesterday’s skirmishes.

The police, meanwhile, placed under suspension the assistant sub-inspector who lobbed a tear gas shell which had hit the boy on his head. The boy had later succumbed to injury in hospital.
