Leh town in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir got some reprieve from the intense cold wave sweeping the state even as the minimum temperature stayed nearly 10 degrees below the freezing point.
The night temperature at Leh and surrounding areas rose to minus 9.6 degrees Celsius against minus 16.6 degrees Celsius recorded a day before,a MeT department official said.
However,among the major inhabited towns in the state,Kargil was the coldest place which recorded a minimum of minus 9.8 degrees last night,the official said.
There was not let off in the cold wave conditions in rest of Kashmir division although the minimum temperature at almost all place appreciated by a few points.
Srinagar city,the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir,recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius,which is 1.6 degrees higher than recorded on Friday.
The sub-zero temperatures resulted in a thin layer of ice forming at the peripheries of several water bodies,including world famous Dal Lake. However,the ice melted as the day progressed.
The Pahalgam health resort in south Kashmir,100 kms from here,and the Gulmarg Ski resort,52 kms from here,in north Kashmir were the coldest places in the Valley with a minimum of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius.
