Union Minister for Women and Child Development (WCD) Annapurna Devi Wednesday announced that the Central government has introduced a facial recognition two factor authentication process for delivering Take Home Ration (THR) in six districts in six states including Ranchi as a model project.

Devi said that the THR scheme will be implemented in Ranchi by the end of this month, where the  beneficiary’s photo will be captured and a one time password will be sent on their phones.

The Minister also said that on paper, the Centre has also given a go ahead to upgrade 2,500 mini Anganwadis and also upgrade Anganwadi centres, more than 30,000 in the state as ‘Saksham Anganwadi’ or the Integrated Nutrition Support Programme.

“The idea is that whenever a beneficiary comes to get the THR their picture will be captured and then an OTP will be sent for authentication. If this becomes successful it will be replicated throughout the country,” said Devi in Ranchi.

Anganwadi workers showed reluctance to the model project on the scheme.

One Anganwadi worker said: “There is a POSHAN tracker application… However, we have to deal with networking issues as well as we lack training just to get the data entered in the system.”
