Announce special relief package, step up rescue ops in flood-hit areas: Rahul Gandhi to PM Modi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce a special relief package for flood-hit Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, and to step up rescue operations.

“Modiji, floods have caused massive destruction in Punjab. The situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand is also extremely worrying,” Gandhi said in a post on X. He added, “I urge that a special relief package be announced immediately for these states, especially for farmers – and relief and rescue operations be accelerated.”

Flood situation in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh

Punjab has declared all 23 districts flood-hit, with 30 deaths and more than 3.5 lakh people affected. Rivers remain swollen and reservoirs are at full capacity.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah Monday toured flood-hit Jammu and assured some of the victims he met of relief and rehabilitation. Shah was accompanied by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Leader of Opposition in the J-K Assembly Sunil Sharma.

In Himachal Pradesh, two women died on Tuesday as heavy rain triggered landslides and flash floods, shutting over 1,000 roads. An orange alert has been issued in four districts. Schools in Shimla remain shut. Uttarakhand also reported heavy showers.

Punjab CM presses for dues

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Governor Gulab Chand Kataria visited flood-hit districts. Mann toured the flood-affected areas of Ferozepur on a boat; Kataria visited Ferozepur and the severely affected areas of Tarn Taran.

Expressing concern over the “meagre compensation” given to people for losses suffered due to natural disasters, Mann sought an upward revision in the Centre’s relief norms.

He sought the release of Punjab’s Rs 60,000 crore “pending” funds from the Centre, saying “he is demanding the state’s rights and not begging for it.”
