Four judges elevated to Supreme Court, oath-taking ceremony to be held tomorrow

As per the notification issued, the President has cleared the elevation of Justices Hemant Gupta, Ramayyagari Subhash Reddy, Mukeshkumar Rasikbhai Shah and Ajay Rastogi to the Supreme Court.

The Ministry of Law and Justice on Thursday notified the appointment of four judges as Supreme Court judges. As per the notification, the President has appointed Justices Hemant Gupta, Ramayyagari Subhash Reddy, Mukeshkumar Rasikbhai Shah and Ajay Rastogi “with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices”. The swearing-in ceremony will be held tomorrow.

Justice Hemant Gupta is presently the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. He began his career as an advocate in 1980 has been practising Labour law, Company law, Constitutional law and Service law ever since. He had served as an additional advocate general for Punjab between 1997 and 1999 and was appointed a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in July 2002. In February 2016, he was transferred to the Patna High Court and in the same year in October, he was appointed the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. Last year in March, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Ramayyagari Subhash Reddy started practising Civil, Criminal and Constitutional law in 1980. In 2002, he was elevated as an additional judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court and was sworn in as a permanent judge in 2004. In February 2016, he was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court. He is also the first judge from Telangana, after the state was carved out from the state, to be elevated to the top court.

Mukeshkumar Rasikbhai Shah, Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, was recently transferred from the Gujarat High Court where he began practising Constitutional law, central excise and customs law in 1982. He served as an additional standing counsel for the Central Government and also appeared for the Central Bureau of Investigation. He was appointed an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court in March 2004. He was transferred in August this year.

Tripura High Court Chief Justice Ajay Rastogi first began practising in the Rajasthan High Court in 1982. He became a judge of the Rajasthan High Court in September 2004. He also served as the acting Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court for a month before being transferred to Tripura.
