Bangladesh interim government head Muhammad Yunus has said seven poeople have been arrested for the murder of a 27-year-old Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das in Bhaluka, Mymensingh.
Das was beaten to death on Friday over blasphemy allegations. His body was then tied upside down to a tree and set on fire.

“The arrested individuals are — 1. Md. Limon Sarkar (19) 2. Md. Tarek Hossain (19) 3. Md. Manik Mia (20) 4. Ershad Ali (39) 5. Nijum Uddin (20) 6. Alomgir Hossain (38) 7. Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46). RAB-14 conducted operations at various locations and arrested the aforementioned suspects,” Yunus said in an X post.
Das’ lynching has raised fears of targeted attacks against the minority community in Bangladesh again. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said: “I appreciate the condemnation issued by the Government of Bangladesh, but must ask them what they are doing to punish the murderers, and what steps they are taking to ensure that such incidents do not recur?”
Author Taslima Nasreen said Das was a victim of fake accusation. She also claimed that he was under police protection before he was lynched: “Dipu Chandra Das worked at a factory in Bhaluka, Mymensingh. He was a poor laborer. One day, a Muslim coworker wanted to punish him over some trivial matter, so in the middle of a crowd he announced that Dipu had made derogatory remarks about the Prophet. That was enough. Frenzied followers of the Prophet pounced on Dipu like hyenas and began to tear him apart. Eventually the police rescued him and took him into custody—meaning Dipu was under police protection.”
The lynching of Das came amid anti-India protests over the assassination of student leader and poll aspirant from Dhaka 8 constituency Sharif Osman Hadi. His death has thrown Bangladesh into utter chaos, with incidents of arson, vandalism, and looting being reported from different regions in and around Dhaka.
The United Nations has called for restraint and peace as violent protests continued in Dhaka. The UN has also urged a speedy investigation into Hadi’s murder and to ensure that electoral rights of Bangladeshis are protected as they go to elections in two months.
