BRICS leaders condemn Pahalgam attack: Addressing the BRICS session on peace and security, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Pahalgam was a “direct attack on the soul, identity and dignity of India”. He said “giving silent consent to terrorism, supporting terror or terrorists” for “personal or political gain” should not be acceptable under any circumstances, and “there should be no hesitation in imposing sanctions against terrorists”. “We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, 2025, during which 26 people were killed,” the BRICS declaration said.

BRICS must reflect credibility, lead Global South by example: PM Modi at Rio Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for BRICS to act as a catalyst for global cooperation and a multipolar world, urging the grouping to lead by example and meet the expectations of the Global South.

Speaking at the Outreach Session on 'Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence' at the 17th BRICS Summit here, Modi said the strength of the bloc lies in its diversity and shared commitment to multipolarity.

"The diversity of the BRICS group and our firm belief in multipolarity are our greatest strengths. We must reflect on how BRICS can serve as a guiding force for a multipolar world in times to come," the prime minister said.

In a post on X he said, "First, emphasis should be on improving our own systems so that our credibility is boosted when we call for reformed multilateralism. This is important considering economic cooperation within BRICS has been steadily progressing."

"While sanctioning projects through the BRICS New Development Banks (NDBs), there must be a focus on demand-driven decision-making, long-term financial sustainability and maintaining a healthy credit rating," he added.

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit, the Congress on Sunday recalled the events leading up to the formation of the grouping. It also recalled the Summit hosted by India in 2012 during which then PM Manmohan Singh had proposed the establishment of a BRICS Development Bank.

In a post on X, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, "After dropping by in Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, and Argentina, the Super Premium Frequent Flier Prime Minister has reached Brazil. The Seventeenth BRICS Summit begins today in Rio de Janeiro." It was in 1998 that the Arabic-speaking, Asia-leaning, Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov floated the idea of a trilateral forum called RIC -- Russia, India and China, he recalled.

This was done to promote multipolarity in global affairs when the US was triumphant. "

He added: "Then in November 2001, Jim O'Neill and his research team at Goldman Sachs in New York came out with a report titled Building Better Global Economic BRICs--Brazil, Russia, India and China that were identified as the four powerhouse economies for the future."

The 16th BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia was the first summit which included the extended members. - Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran.

Which countries will be in attendance?

China's President Xi Jinping will skip the summit for the first time since he became his country's leader in 2012.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will make an appearance via videoconference, as he continues to mostly avoid travelling abroad due to an international arrest warrant issued after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Egypt's Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi will also be absent.

Saudi Arabia has been invited and is participating in member discussions, but it has yet to send its confirmation letter.
