A fresh video posted by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) shows Chandrayaan-3 Pragyan rover roaming around Shiv Shakti Point — the spacecraft’s landing spot on the Moon — in search of lunar secrets at the south pole.
In the 40-second video, the rover can be seen moving on the crater-filled lunar surface, leaving the wheel tracks behind it with the lander nearby. In a video released on Friday, the rover was seen ramping down from the lander to the surface of the Moon. The space agency had also confirmed that the rover had covered a distance of 8 metres on the lunar surface and the two science experiments it was carrying had also been switched on.
Taking to X, ISRO tweeted: “Pragyan rover roams around Shiv Shakti Point in pursuit of lunar secrets at the South Pole!”
Earlier on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced from Bengaluru that the point where the Vikram lander touched down on the lunar surface would be named “Shiv Shakti”.
The rover is capable of travelling a total distance of 500 metres.
The ISRO on Wednesday scripted history as Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft made a soft landing on the surface of the Moon. With this, India became the first nation to reach the Moon’s uncharted south pole region and the fourth country to successfully land a spacecraft on the Moon — after the erstwhile Soviet Union, United States and China.
