Attacking the Union government over the recent incidents of attacks on minorities, especially Muslims, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said “miscreants have got a free hand from the BJP government, that is why they have got the courage to do this”. The comment came following attacks on two Muslim men in Haryana and Maharashtra over suspicion of beef consumption. In Haryana, Sabir Malik (22), was beaten to death in Charkhi Dadri district on August 27. In Maharashtra's Thane, an FIR was registered on Saturday against a group of men for assaulting a 72-year-old man in a Mumbai-bound express train on suspicion of carrying beef. The elderly man was carrying buffalo meat, which is not banned, the police said after a preliminary probe. Gandhi blamed the authorities for the spread of communal violence. “Those who have climbed the ladder of power by using hatred as a political weapon are continuously establishing the reign of fear across the country. Hateful elements hidden in the form of mobs are openly spreading violence, challenging the rule of law,” he said in a post on X. “Attacks on minorities, especially Muslims, are continuing and the govt machinery is watching as a mute spectator,” he said. Congress vows to quell fake news via social media New Delhi: The first meeting of the newly constituted Congress law, human rights and RTI department was held Sunday with the party saying that it will focus on the role of the “social media, where fake news is rampant”. After the meeting, department chairperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the department is working towards connecting with communities in the election-bound states. "In the last 5 years, any number of complaints have been dealt with both Election Commission (EC) related and non-EC related. We want to focus especially on the role of the department social media, where fake news is rampant," he said. "Today, all kinds of nonsense and propaganda is there on social media. So our team has already filed FIRs in the last three weeks and they have also been removed," said the Congress leader.
