In less than a month after the state saw floods, on Tuesday, several parts of Manipur were inundated due to incessant rain over the last 24 hours. Major rivers like Thoubal and Iril in Imphal are flowing above the flood level, resulting in flooding at several parts of the valley, including Imphal city. Manipur Water Resources and Relief and Disaster Management Minister, Awangbow Newmai inspected the rivers at Kangla, Moirangkhom, Khuman Lampak, Ayangpali Road, Khurai and various other places in and around Imphal areas to prevent flooding. During the visit, Awangbow said that due to the incessant rainfall since Monday, some areas of Manipur have been affected. He also said that the state government is putting maximum effort to control the flood. He sought cooperation from the people to tackle flood-related problems in Manipur. Schools shut for 2 days An official statement issued by the state Education Department said, “In view of the rising river level and subsequent flooding of many areas and inconveniences caused to many households and installations across the state due to incessant rain and in anticipation of the flood-like condition continuing for some more days to come, and keeping in mind the safety of the students and teachers of the state, all schools of the state, Government, Government Aided, Private and Central Schools will remain closed on the 3rd and 4th of July, 2024”. One dead, one missing in Senapati district In flood-related incidents, at least one man was found dead while another was reported missing in the Senapati district. The deceased was identified as A Singsao, 25, of Kabung Karong. Police sources said the deceased was travelling in his vehicle when a mudslide suddenly swept his vehicle into the Senapati River on Monday. His body was fished out from the Senapati River by a team of police and State Disaster Response Force on Tuesday morning. In a separate incident, H Martin, 18, of Willong Khullen remained untraceable after he was swept away by a landslide along the Imphal-Dimapur road. A search operation is reportedly underway by a joint team of the police, SDRF and locals. In May, the state experienced its third-worst flood after 1988 and 2015. At least two people died and thousands were affected by the flood in May 2024.
