A man who travelled from UAE to Kerala last week has been hospitalised after he developed symptoms of mpox.

Health Minister Veena George said the youth was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital at Manjeri in Malappuram district.

“He had reached home last week. Since he had developed symptoms, he initially went into a self-quarantine at home. He did not interact with others at home. Yesterday, he got admitted to the Medical College Hospital. His samples have been sent for testing. We are awaiting final confirmation,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Health Department has intensified preventive measures in a few panchayats in Malappuram after a youth died of Nipah virus. Containment zones have been declared at selected wards under Thiruvali, Mambad and Vandoor panchayats.

The minister said 13 samples of high risk persons have turned out negative for Nipah. “The victim’s contact list has 175 persons, with 74 of them health workers. As many as 104 are in the high risk category and 10 persons are admitted to hospital with symptoms of Nipah,” she said.
