OBSERVING THAT India supports sustainable livestock transformation as a means to protect the health of people, animals, and the planet, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh ‘Lalan’ said Monday that the proposed Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transformation should serve as a guiding framework, not a prescriptive model.
Addressing a high-level ministerial session at the ‘Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation’ organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, Singh said: “We believe the proposed Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transfor-mation should serve as a guiding framework, not a prescriptive model. It must allow adequate policy space for national priorities, capacities, and circumstances of developing countries.”
“We need a phased, realistic transition, supported by financial and technical assistance, technology transfer and capacity building,” he said.
Singh said India stands ready to collaborate, contribute and co-create solutions. “Guided by the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family — India is ready to share its cost-effective and scalable innovations with the Global South through South-South and Triangular Cooperation, in close partnership with FAO,” he said.
“On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of FAO, we commend FAO’s steadfast leadership and vision for achieving food security… We reaffirm India’s full support for a future-ready FAO — one that is more inclusive, efficient and responsive to the evolving challenges of our world.” Highlighting India’s progress in the livestock sector, Singh said, “We are committed to making our livestock sector more sustainable, inclusive and resilient — ensuring it continues to improve farmer incomes, support livelihoods, enhance nutritional security and promote environmental sustainability.”
He also highlighted that India has lifted 269 million people out of poverty from 2011 to 2023.
