Punjab’s Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Saturday accused the Union government of not properly taking up the issue of the ban imposed on wearing turbans in France.
The recent statement of French External Affairs Minister Alain Juppe after talking to his counterpart S M Krishna “is a reflection of the arrogant and stubborn attitude of France”,he said.
The turban was not a religious symbol but a part of the Sikh psyche without which the followers of the religion were incomplete,Badal said in a statement here.
“Every faith has a freedom to practice his religion in a democratic country and the French government should not create undue hurdles in this issue,” the SAD president said.
“When the USA,the world’s oldest democracy, and the UK have no problem with wearing turbans, why was the French government targeting Sikhs on the issue?” he asked.
Accusing the Congress-led UPA government of not properly taking up the issue with France, the Deputy Chief Minister said diplomatic pressure on that country should be exerted if needed.
