Nearly 800 Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails

Of the remaining 211,who are all civilians,India has so far been given consular access to 33 prisoners only.

There are 793 Indians in Pakistani jails,out of which 582 are fishermen.

Of the remaining 211,who are all civilians,India has so far been given consular access to 33 prisoners only,External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said,adding “it is believed that there are 178 other Indian nationals in Pakistani jails,who have not been provided consular access.”

Release of Indian prisoners from Pakistani jails has been one of the priorities of the government and it has been consistently taking up the issue with Pakistan at all appropriate levels,Krishna said while replying to a question in Rajya Sabha.

An India-Pak Judicial Committee on Prisoners consisting of four retired judges from each side has been set up to recommend steps from humane treatment and expeditious release of prisoners of the respective countries in each other’s jails,the minister said.

The committee has so far had three meetings.
