Days after stating that he would join the RSS, former DGP Jacob Thomas Wednesday attended the organisation’s path sanchalan in Kochi.
Thomas, who had joined BJP in 2021, turned up for the path sanchalan in an RSS uniform — brown trousers and white shirt. This comes two days after he had announced the decision to become an RSS worker saying the organisation has no caste or religion.
“It aims at nation building,” he said.
After joining the BJP, Thomas, who had retired from service in 2020, had unsuccessfully contested the assembly elections from Irinjalakkuda.
The first Pinarayi Vijayan government in 2016 had appointed Thomas as the vigilance director. However, he is believed to have fallen out of favour after the then minister E P Jayarajan was booked in a police case following allegations that he appointed his own family members as heads of public sector undertakings in the state.
In December 2017, he was suspended for having criticised the government over rescue efforts in the aftermath of Cyclone Ockhi, and the government eventually extended the suspension citing various reasons. He was reinstated to service months before his retirement in 2020.
While serving as vigilance director, Thomas had ordered inspection of the house of then additional secretary K M Abraham as part of a vigilance probe into alleged disproportionate assets. This is believed to have caused rancour in a section of senior IAS and IPS officials.
Thomas is the third former DGP to associate himself with the Sangh Parivar. Last year, former DGP R Sreelekha, who was the first woman IPS officer in Kerala cadre, joined the BJP and was recently made one of the party’s vice-presidents.
Another former DGP T P Senkumar is also known as a BJP fellow traveller.
