With a can of holy water from the historical Dukh Bhanjani Beri pond inside the Golden Temple premises and prayer on their lips, the family of death row convict in Pakistan,Sarabjit Singh,on Sunday crossed over to Pakistan through the Attari border at about 1.15 pm.
The family included Sarabjits sister Dalbir Kaur, wife Sukhpreet Kaur and daughters Swapandeep and Poonam. The water from the jujube tree pond is believed to have healing powers.
The family will meet Sarabjit who has been admitted to state-run Jinnah Hospital in Lahore after being attacked by inmates of the Kot Lakhpat Jail. He reportedly is in deep coma. I am sure that once this holy water touches the lips of my brother, his condition would improve, said Dalbir Kaur at the Attari border.
She said the family would request Pakistan to allow us to get Sarabjit treated outside the country. We would prefer he be treated in India. But depending on his condition,we may also press for his treatment abroad at some suitable medical facility, Dalbir Kaur said.
Dalbir said she was leaving for Pakistan with the wishes and hopes of the country to bring back Sarabjit. We would also ask Pakistan to keep the dreaded inmates separate from others so that in future they do not attack any Indian or Pakistani prisoner, she said. The family said that the attack on Sarabjit could not have occurred without the connivance of jail officials.
Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Congress MLA from Amritsar (West) Raj Kumar Verka accompanied the family to Attari. He said a notice to send a panel of doctors to Pakistan to examine Sarabjit has been been sent to officials in India, who would take up the matter with Pakistan.
