U’khand: Rain, cloudbursts claim 17 lives

At Khinduri, Bairagav and Purola villages, more that 200 villagers have been cut off from the rest of the state following a landslip and cloudbursts.

At least 17 persons, including 14 in Pauri districts, lost their lives in separate incidents of cloudbursts, flash floods and collapse of houses in Uttarakhand Friday. Reports about incessant rain are coming from across the state. Meanwhile, river Ganga crossed the danger mark in Haridwar at 4 pm Friday.

DM of Pauri C S Bhatt confirmed the report about cloudbursts claiming at least 14 lives in his district. “We have sent rescue teams to all the sites which faced disaster. NDRF teams have also reached the sites,” he added.

According to the emergency operation centre at the district headquarters, the heavy rainfall in the district has badly damaged road connectivity to rural parts. “We have requested the state government to provide a helicopter to rescue people who are struck at a few places due to flash floods,” an official at the centre told The Indian Express over the phone.

Meanwhile, in Himachal Pradesh, heavy rain in parts of Hamirpur and Una disrupted normal life leaving behind a trail of destruction. Four members of a family were swept away in Kuhana Khud in Hamirpur, while another was buried in a landslide. Police also recovered the body of an unidentified youth. A two-and-a-half-year old girl went missing after she was washed away by a swollen rivulet in Sainre village. (with PTI)
