Two cops ‘closed’ for alleged assault on woman scribe in Guwahati

A lady reporter of a Guwahati-based satellite TV news channel lodged an FIR.

The Guwahati City Police on Saturday closed to reserve two police officers – one an Inspector and the other a Sub-Inspector – for allegedly assaulting, attempting to murder and outraging the modesty of a lady journalist inside the police station in the Assam capital.

Earlier, a lady reporter of a Guwahati-based satellite TV news channel lodged an FIR complaining that a number of policemen including Inspector Chidananda Bora (OC of Latasil PS) and Sub-Inspector Samsuddin Ahmed assaulted her and her camera-person as they were coming out of the Latasil police station shooting visuals of the dilapidated condition of the police station and some quarters in its campus.

“The Sub-Inspector, the OC and a few other police personnel used criminal force against me attempting to disrobe me and my camera-person inside the police station and mercilessly beat us. They also pointed official arms at us and threatened us not to publish the story,” the FIR lodged by the lady reporter said. She also mentioned that some male police personnel also molested her. The incident occurred around 12:15 PM today.

The TV channel later aired stories saying that the lady reporter had found a story about a police quarter allegedly rented out by the allottee to some private person. The quarter allegedly was in the name of Sub-Inspector Samsuddin Ahmed, who was recently transferred from Latasil police station to Paltanbazar police station.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Jyotirmoy Chakravarty said the police have already registered a case on the basis of the FIR lodged by the lady reporter, and had ‘closed to reserve’ (removed from duty) Inspector Chidananda Bora (OC of Latasil PS) and Sub-Inspector S Ahmed. “An ACP has been entrusted the task of investigating the case as the OC himself is named as an accused in this case,” Commissioner Chakravarty told The Indian Express.

The Commissioner also said that the police have received two more FIRs, one by a lady who was a sister of SI Ahmed (who was apparently staying at the quarter that Ahmed still held) and another by SI Ahmed himself.
