On his last day in office, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha assured officers that all his decisions were taken in the best interests of the agency, and that time would tell whether he would stand vindicated.

Sources said Sinha was at the CBI headquarters throughout the day, where some officers met him to convey their best wishes. Sinha also met senior officers in the afternoon, and tied up some “routine work’’ before a farewell function.

Around 5 pm, CBI officers assembled at the canteen of the CBI headquarters for a formal send-off. Sources said Special Director Anil Sinha spoke on Sinha for a few minutes, as did an Additional Director, the Joint Director Administration and the Director of Prosecution.

“The Director then stood up and delivered a short speech lasting around three to four minutes. He said it was unfortunate that he was retiring amidst controversy, but that all the decisions he took as CBI Director were taken in the best interests of the agency. He said he stood by all his decisions, and that only time would tell whether he was right,” said a CBI source.

“He concluded his speech saying that his home would always be open to any CBI officer or staff seeking any help or advice from him,” the source added.

The CBI officers also presented a memento to Sinha, following which he headed to his office.

Stepping out of the CBI headquarters, Sinha told journalists in a parting jibe, “It has been a very eventful tenure. I want to thank the media for the wide coverage on me, and for building a public perception about me.”

Alluding to TV visuals in which he appeared to be napping at a high-level security conference in Guwahati last week, Sinha quipped that TV cameras had focussed on him a lot, and he did not wish to be on camera anymore.

“I am not a saint or spiritual leader to deliver a message to anyone,” Sinha replied, when asked whether he had any message for his successor.
