Sukhbir orders drive against drug trade

Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today issued directives to all SSPs and police commissioners to launch a concerted drive against the drug trade and come out with concrete results within a month

Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today issued directives to all SSPs and police commissioners to launch a concerted drive against the drug trade and come out with concrete results within a month.

Reviewing the law and order situation in the state at a meeting with SSPs of all districts and chiefs of police commissionerates,Sukhbir directed the police officers to strike at the root of the drug trade and not be content with just arresting drug peddlers. “You must investigate the forward and backward linkages,” he said.

Sukhbir said that though there was an increase in the recovery of narcotics, the force should not be complacent as peddlers were still trying to induce youths to take drugs. He asked SSPs to conduct micro-analysis of their districts to check the flow of drugs.

The deputy CM agreed with the suggestion of Director General of Police Sumedh Singh that police personnel found colluding with peddlers must be weeded out. Giving clear directions to identify and weed out corrupt elements within the police,Sukhbir said that any officer suspended on charges of corruption would be automatically debarred from any public post for the rest of his career.

Sukhbir said that besides intelligence and other sources,he was regularly getting feedback from formal and informal channels regarding the problem of drug addiction in the state. Any SSPs not performing in this area will lose command of the district.
