Punjab govt’s compensation policy under HC scanner

The bench opined that state authorities ought to verify whether a victim has actually been a 1984 riot victim. For this,the court added,authorities need to conduct physical verification by visiting houses of alleged victims and make inquiries.

The development took place during the hearing of a petition filed by victims of 1984 riots,demanding issuance of red cards — issued to help identify such victims.

Some victims alleged that the committee constituted to identify victims was not performing its duty properly and was issuing red cards to fake riot victims. They also demanded a CBI probe into the matter.

The court was told that that in Ludhiana alone,578 people have been given red cards. It was alleged that some who have received the cards,were not even born when the riots took place.

Shoe-thrower granted bail

New Delhi: All India Sikh Students Federation president Karnail Singh,arrested on Tuesday for allegedly hurling a shoe at district and sessions judge J R Aryan after he acquitted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 riots case,was sent to 14-day judicial custody on Wednesday morning but released on bail later in the evening.
