Over 1.30 lakh motorcyclists were challaned in the Delhi in the first 45 days of this year with statistics projecting an increase in prosecution of two-wheelers this year compared to last year.
According to Delhi Police,a total of 1,31,090 motorcyclists were challaned in the capital this year till February 15 besides arresting 955 drivers and impounding 549 vehicles for various offences.
“Last year,we challaned 9,00,286 motorcyclists and going by the rate of challans this year we expect to cross 10-lakh mark,” a senior police official said.
Last year,11,046 motorcyclists were arrested and 3,412 two-wheelers were impounded.
The highest number of prosecution in the past three years was reported in 2009 when a total of 11,20,855 motorcyclists were challaned. It was an “tremendous” increase from the 2008 figure of 7,58637,the official said.
According to statistics,40,932 drivers were arrested in 2009 and 9,019 vehicles impounded,also the highest figure for the past three years.
The figures for drivers’ arrest in 2008 was 6,061 and impounded vehicles was 7,709.
