Congress president Sonia Gandhi and BJP leader Varun Gandhi were dragged into the controversy involving Lalit Modi with the former IPL chief alleging that the BJP MP had offered to broker a deal to settle matters with the Congress chief. Varun Gandhi was quick to dub Modi’s allegations, that came out in his tweets, as “ridiculous nonsense.”
Lalit Modi, who is embroiled in a controversy over his links with senior BJP leaders, tweeted: “Mr @varungandhi80 came to see me at my house a few years ago and said he can settle everything in @INCIndia with his aunt. He wanted me to meet her sister from Italy.”

Varun rubbished the charges against him. “How can I respond seriously to something that is patently untrue. It is beneath my dignity to delve deeper into this ridiculous nonsense,” he told The Indian Express.
Modi, who has been making allegations against a series of political leaders through his tweets, further posted: “Please Mr @varungandhi80 — let the world know what you told about what auntie wants — witness is our good friend world renowned astrologer.”
“Please clarify @varungandhi80 did u or did u not come to my house in london. Whilst staying at the Ritz hotel in lon(don) a few years ago — the auntie he refers to is #soniagandhi. The sister is #soniagandhi sister — just for clarity,” he added.
“I heard him, next I heard from our common friend who introduced us that Auntie wants 60 million dollars. Told them whaaaat are u nuts…Can he deny that. I hope he does,” Modi alleged in a series of tweets.
Later in the day, K Jagat Singh, a BJP MLA from Rajasthan and son of former Union minister K Natwar Singh, took to twitter “to put the truth on record”.
“Meeting was at behest of Varun Gandhi. Got a call from LM a week later. Most upset. Shocked at what he had to say,” he tweeted, adding: “Did not introduce Varun Gandhi to Lalit Modi. Facilitated meeting through a common friend; world renowned astrologer. Was in India at time.” Lalit Modi retweeted his posts.
The BJP rushed to defend the party MP. “Varun Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi are in different parties and the world knows about the ties between the two families,” Shahnawaz Hussain said.
Meanwhile, the Congress called Lalit Modi’s claims an attempt to save the embattled Narendra Modi government.
