JNU MMS scandal: Porn clip guilty must go,says V-C

“Once we have established a prima facie case against the accused,we will be suspending them pending inquiry. This should happen within a couple of days,” said a senior official. On Monday,however,the JNU administration had said the students will be suspended after completion of the inquiry.

Sopory,facing his first crisis since taking over on January 28,said he would make sure that such an act was not repeated. “I have met with the security staff. We are thinking of implementing some pre-emptive measures,” he said.

Sopory also said he would look at the possibility of amending the JNU Hostel Manual,which he had co-authored,to make it more in sync with the changing times. “There is no place for such elements in the University. Anybody found guilty will be strictly dealt with. We do not want the university in the news for the wrong reasons.”

Apart from violation of the Hostel Manual rules,the accused could also be slapped with charges of circulating the clip,said H B Bohidar,Chief Proctor. “We have not established the motive yet. The boy (who appears in the clip) has claimed that he had nothing to do with the circulation of the clip. We have not yet found a copy of the video on him,” said Bohidar. He said that his office was in possession of a copy of the video,supplied by the university’s security department.

Bohidar also said his office will wrap up the inquiry sooner than earlier reported. “We will be submitting the report in less than a week and then file the FIR.”

A final-year undergraduate student of the School of Languages,who appears in the clip,and a second-year Master of Computer Applications student are the accused in the case. Incidentally,the MCA student had helped expose a ragging incident that took place in the Tapti Hostel last year.

Late on Tuesday,various student organisations on campus issued a joint statement condemning the incident and called for a thorough inquiry.
