THE Jammu & Kashmir Police on Sunday arrested two villagers and claimed to have solved a murder case involving the killing of a 70-year-old Gujjar Saraj Din and his son Beniya at village Sadota in Pancheri area of hilly Udhampur district last week.
Identifying them as Kaka Ram of Sadhota and Khem Raj of Basnote, police said that dispute over a piece of land was the cause of both the murders.
During the interrogation, accused told police that deceased Saraj Din had purchased a piece of land from Nek Ram, father of accused Kaka Ram, nearly 30 years ago without any legal agreement/deed. As Kaka Ram was not accepting the deal, both parties often had altercation over the issue.
After a number of meetings, local panchayat asked Saraj Din to pay Rs 70,000 to Kaka Ram by June 20 this year, which the deceased failed to pay. On this, both the parties had heated exchanges which was witnessed by locals.
In view of this enmity, Kaka Ram in connivance with Khem Raj hatched a conspiracy to kill Saraj Din and his son. Accordingly, duo equipped with axes entered Saraj Din’s house on the intervening night of June 22-23 and killed him and his son who were asleep at that time. On disclosure of the accused, both the axes used in the murder have been seized by police.
