Jharkhand ‘revenge rape’: Centre promises action
Alleged friend of the victim also arrested on charges of abduction.
The alleged rape of a 14-year-old Dalit girl in Bokaro in retaliation for her brother’s molestation of a woman was raised in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, following which the Minister for Social Justice promised action.
BJP MP from Madhya Pradesh Prabhat Jha to ask the question during Zero Hour. Jha said heads should hang in shame over the incident where the head of a panchayat issued a diktat to rape a minor in broad day-light, with the entire village remaining a mute spectator.
“I appeal to the government of India to ensure justice to her. This kind of incidents cannot happen in India…strict action is needed,” Jha said, as members cutting across party lines shouted “shame, shame”. Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad followed up, saying, “….the entire village should be held accountable.” Deputy chairman P J Kurien, who was in the Chair, said, “The entire House is one on the issue. This being a heinous crime on a minor, government should enquire and come to House. Also, if such a crime has happened serious action should be taken.”
The RS demanded an Action Taken Report on the incident. Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot then informed the House, “Necessary action will be initiated in the serious matter after taking up the issue with the Prime Minister.”
The Indian Express had reported on Friday that the residents of Gulgulia Dhora in Gomia block had refused to intervene as alleged rapist Nakabandi Pasi dragged the girl from one of their dwelling to another by her hair and then to a spot half a kilometre into the forest. Nakabandi had been emboldened by the ‘sanction’ given by Ghosal Pasi, headman of the hamlet, who was also his father-in-law.
