Himachal government orders probe into audio CD row

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Wednesday ordered a high level probe into the leak of a controversial audio CD, allegedly containing health minister's private conversations with a close businessman and a woman.

Apparently giving in to pressure from Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Wednesday ordered a high-level probe into the audio CD controversy. The CD purportedly contains Thakur’s private conversations with a businessman friend and a woman.

This comes after days of verbal sparring between the CM and the health minister, who had hit out at each other as the minister had accused the chief minister of being behind the leak and sought a CBI probe.

At Mandi, his hometown, Thakur held a press conference on Wednesday demanding a CBI probe, if not an inquiry by the state police, into the issue.

The probe, which will be fact-finding in nature, will be headed by IGP rank officer Rakesh Aggarwal, currently posted in the state’s CID.

The CM, who was in Bilaspur, later spoke to DGP Sanjay Kumar and directed him to assign the probe to a senior officer. “We have received instructions from the Chief Minister to conduct a probe,” said Kumar.

The CD, which was sent to media houses by an unidentified person, had created a rift between the health minister and Chief Minister.

Thakur said, “It’s an attempt at character assassination. There are people behind this,” he said.

The CM had denied any role in the issue. He had linked the CD source to alleged tapping of telephones during the tenure of the previous BJP government.
