Delhi Government is yet to issue guidelines on medical facilities for city schools which it had promised soon after the death of a teenager following an asthma attack in a prominent private school in April.
In the wake of public outrage over death of 17-year-old Akkriti Bhatia of Modern School,Vasant Vihar, the Government had announced that it will soon frame guidelines for the schools to meet with medical eventualities. In fact,Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely last month had promised that guidelines will be ready in “two to three days”.
However, till date no such directives or guidelines have been issued to the private schools. A Government-appointed committee had found glaring lapses on the part of the school in providing medical help to Akkriti, who died on the way to hospital after suffering the asthma attack on April 20. “It will be ready for the next academic session,” said an official when asked why there was delay in formulating the guidelines.
The school authorities have suspended the sports teacher and nurse after Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit held them responsible for inept handling of the case. Not only private schools but also those run by the state government will have to adhere to the guidelines to ensure that children get proper medical facilities when in need.
