Former IGP granted interim bail

Former Inspector General of Police A Ponnuchami, an accused in the Dara Singh fake encounter case, got interim bail for a month Friday by the Rajasthan High Court. Ponnuchami had sought bail for a period of two months to visit his terminally ill mother based in Chennai.

“Ponnuchami’s mother is 86 years old and is battling cancer. She wanted to see her son and thus we had moved an application for two months interim bail. The court has ordered bail for one month and after the bail bonds are furnished, he is likely to leave for Chennai,” Mahesh Gupta, Ponnuchami’s counsel, told The Indian Express.

Ponnuchami, a 1991 batch IPS officer, has been in jail for almost three years since his arrest by the CBI on May 15, 2011. He is one of the two IPS officers accused in the Dara Singh fake encounter case in which state cabinet minister Rajendra Singh Rathore too is an accused.
