Foreign Secy reaches Nepal, takes stock of country’s political situation

He met Maoist chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Constituent Assembly chairman Subhash Nembang among others.

Foreign secretary S Jaishankar arrived here on a two-day visit as part of his ‘SAARC Yatra’ and took stock of Nepal’s political situation.
On his arrival, Jaishankar said: “My visit reflects the importance our government and Prime Minister attach to our relations with Nepal. I hope to review progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation.” “As part of her Neighbourhood First policy, India is committed to strengthen her multifaceted and mutually beneficial relationship with Nepal.  We support the aspirations of the people of Nepal for peace, stability and prosperity,” said Jaishankar.

He met Maoist chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Constituent Assembly chairman Subhash Nembang, besides Nepal’s Foreign Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pande and Secretary Shankar Bairagi. Sources said Nepal reiterated its support to India whenever it made its bid for a permanent seat to the UN Security Council. He will be meeting Nepal’s President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, UML leader K P Oli and leaders from Madhes based parties on Friday before his departure.
