Even as Pakistan started mortar shelling from across the border in the fifth ceasefire violation in past four days on Tuesday, Army troops apprehended a former Territorial Army (TA) jawan on the suspicion of directing Pakistani fire towards India.
Identifying the former jawan as Liyaqat Hussain, sources said he was disembodied from the TA in 2011. A company of Rashtriya Rifles deployed in adjoining Hamirpur area had apprehended Liyaqat, who was later handed over to the local police.
Sources said after a brief lull, shelling by Pakistani troops started once again in Balakote area of Poonch around 12.45 am on Tuesday and continued till 3.30 in the afternoon. “They also resorted to firing 82 mm mortar shells at four forward Indian positions in adjoining Hamirpur Sector from 1 pm,” said Defence Ministry spokesperson Lt Colonel Manish Mehta.

Since last month, 10 people, including three jawans, have died and nearly three dozen others injured in shelling by Pakistani troops and Rangers at various places along both the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army has been retaliating.
The spokesperson said Pakistani Rangers also resorted to firing small arms and mortar shelling along the IB in R S Pura sector near Jammu on Monday night, injuring a civilian later identified as Suresh Chandra of Gurha Brahman (Akhnoor). He is being treated at a local hospital.
The BSF spokesman said there was intermittent firing of small arms and mortar bombs by Pakistan Rangers from 10 pm last night on five Border Out Posts (BoPs) along the IB in Arnia and R S Pura sectors in Jammu district.
