Chief Justice of India H L Dattu
Chief Justice of India H L Dattu Monday invoked Indian philosophy while deciding a petition by a man, facing charges in a marital discord case. The man had opposed his estranged wife’s choice of the city where a criminal case between the couple should continue. When his lawyer said the trial should take place at a different place, Justice Dattu quipped: “In Indian philosophy, we believe wherever the wife goes, the husband should faithfully follow. Even my brother (Justice Amitava Roy sitting with him on the bench) agrees with me on this.”
More on board
The Law Commission of India has 11 members — seven full-time, including the Chairman, and four part-time. But, generally, it is only the full-time members who sign reports prepared by the panel. However, the death penalty report, which was made public Monday, was signed by three of the four part-time members as well. With three full-time members dissenting, the move came handy in organising a majority.
Not on agenda
Leaders of BJP allies in Bihar may have made tall claims on the share of seats they want to contest in the assembly elections, but when they met BJP chief Amit Shah Monday to discuss seat sharing for the first time, none of them made any demands. Instead, the leaders spent time discussing “the flop-show by JD(U)-RJD-Congress in Patna” and “the fall of Congress president from the topmost leader in the country to the fourth speaker in the rally”.
Defence position
Defence issues seem to be gaining electoral value. While ex-servicemen have spelt out their plans to make their presence felt during Bihar polls, MoS for Defence Rao Inderjit Singh has targeted the Congress for not making the Ordnance Factory in Korwa functional. In Rae Bareli, the constituency of Sonia Gandhi which Singh visited Monday, he also promised to fulfill the demand for a Sainik School within six months.
All for auction
After mentioning the ongoing FM radio e-auction in his Independence Day speech, the PM, while speaking at an event Monday, again underlined how the “transparency” of this auction had led to bids worth more than Rs 1,150 crore being received so far. Many viewed these remarks as a sweetener on a day Information & Broadcasting Secretary Bimal Julka superannuated from service.
