Dal lake freezes as cold conditions aggravate in J-K

With mercury showing no signs of relenting in J-K,the banks of Dal lake were frozen as the night temperature dipped to minus 4.8 degree Celsius in Srinagar.

With mercury showing no signs of relenting in Jammu and Kashmir,the banks of world famous Dal lake were partially frozen as the night temperature on Saturday dipped to minus 4.8 degree Celsius in Srinagar.

Boatmen found it difficult to ferry passengers in the morning due of frozen banks of the water body. However,as the day advanced,the frozen parts of the lake and other ponds started melting.

The mercury continued to show downward trend in the state with Leh in Ladakh region recording a minimum of minus 18.6 degree C,met office said.

Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir continued to be the coldest place in the valley with a low of minus 6.9 degree Celsius.

Srinagar,the summer capital of the state,recorded a low of minus 4.8 degrees as against Friday’s minus 4.6 degree Celsius. Qazigund registered a minimum of minus 5.5,followed by Kupwara minus 4.8 and Kokernag minus 2.8 degrees.

In Jammu region,the highest night temperature of 7.0 was recorded in Batote,followed by Katra (5.9),Jammu (4.5),Banihal (4.0) and Bhaderwah (1.5).
