Company booked after SIM card found with militant

CID lodged an FIR against the service provider after it was found that a SIM card that it issued in the name of one Mohammad Rashid,who died in 2007,was being used by deputy commander of LeT.

A private service provider has been booked for allegedly issuing a SIM card in the name of a dead person that was being used by a top LeT militant,putting a question mark on the verification system for issuing pre-paid mobile connections in Jammu and Kashmir.

The CID (Counter Intelligence) has lodged an FIR against the service provider yesterday after it was found that a SIM card that it issued in the name of one Mohammad Rashid,who died in 2007,was being used by self-styled deputy commander of Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) Irfan Ahmed,a senior police officer said today.

The SIM card was issued by the company’s dealer at Budhal on December 25,2009 and was being used by the militant who was operating in Rajouri district,he said.

“This is a clear case where the company had issued a cell phone connection without proper verification. We are taking action against the company,” he said.

“We came to known about this only after interceptions and verification,” he said,adding the FIR has been registered at CID police station,Jammu.

Last week,two mobile phones with SIM cards of a private company were recovered from a top Hizbul Mujahideen militant slain in a gunbattle with security forces in Reasi district.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had recently asked the security agencies to undertake fool-proof screening of all mobile subscribers to ensure that no such connection goes into wrong hands.

The Centre had lifted the ban on pre-paid mobile phones in Jammu and Kashmir on January 22.
