Lt Ashwini Bakshi takes charge of Vajra Corps

Jalandhar: Lieutenant General Ashwini Kumar Bakshi took charge of Vajra Corps on Wednesday. A recipient of the Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal for meritorious service,Lieutenant Bakshi has replaced Lieutenant General Sanjeev Madhok,who has moved to Army Headquarters as Director General of Information and Technology. After taking over,Bakshi paid homage to the martyrs at the War Memorial.

MO ‘beaten’ by BJP workers

Gurdaspur: A medical officer (MO) working at Community Health Centre here was allegedly beaten up by BJP leaders on Monday night when he refused to visit a patient at home. The MO said that he refused to leave the centre as he was alone on emergency duty on Monday night. Dr Harpal Singh alleged that the BJP leaders came to the hospital and thrashed him. Police have booked five people,including senior BJP leader Surinder Vij. Medical staff of the civil hospitals had organised strike on Wednesday.

12-yr-old ‘raped’ by family friend

Amritsar: A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a railway employee in Amritsar on Tuesday evening. A case was registered on Wednesday and the accused,Ram Bharose,was arrested. The family of the victim revealed that the accused was known to them and both the families had shared a healthy relationship.

Council flays UPSC decision

Chandigarh: The Punjabi Cultural Council has opposed the scrapping of regional language papers in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination. The council sent a letter to the Prime Minister,seeking their intervention. The council has sought immediate withdrawal of the UPSC’s new notification,terming it a “big blow” to rural aspirants.
