A year after 168 personnel were indicted in an inquiry into the clash between officers and soldiers in Ladakh’s Nyoma, action has been recommended against three Majors for charges of assault against a soldier that had triggered the unprecedented violence.
The officers — Majors SK Sharma, Kapil Malik and Ankur Tiwari — had thrashed a jawan who allegedly sexually assaulted the wife of an officer at an artillery camp at Nyoma. The action recommended against them includes loss of seniority, loss of pension and reprimand that shall effectively ruin their army careers. However the punishment is yet to be confirmed by the army authorities.
The trial of several other personnel who were involved in the clash is also on and several soldiers are likely to be dismissed from service.
It may be recalled a clash took place at the 226 field regiment in 2012 in which several officers, including the commanding officer of the unit were injured.
