The Maharashtra state government on Tuesday announced the formation of a committee to draw up suggestions to strengthen the state anti-corruption ombudsman,the Lokayukta.
The decision was taken at a meeting presided by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and also attended by Phadanvis and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar,among others.
The government has agreed to set up a committee under the Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) including other senior bureaucrats.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Devendra Phadanvis,who introduced a private members bill in the Legislative Assembly on giving the Lokayukta more powers,said he expects the state government to finalise suggestions on strengthening the anti-corruption mechanism in the state before the winter session of legislature.
The committee will study the functioning of other states Lokayuktas, Phadanvis said after the meeting,adding that the Advocate General would be consulted too.
