The new arrangement of Punjab state power corporation limited(PSPCL) has left its consumers high and dry. The new directions state that domestic consumers will get maximum power supply during the night while industries will be able to operate during the day. The industries offs,in designated areas, has been reduced to just one day a week. The new arrangement will allow for industries to operate six days a week from 8.30 am to 7.30 pm. They will not be allowed to run night shifts so that PSPCL can supply power to the domestic sector.
If you want to sleep well in night, bear a powerless day, said a power corporation official. Apart from domestic consumers, more than 40 per cent of the industry is also located in mixed-land use areas which get their supply from domestic feeders. These industries will now have to either change their shifts or run entirely on generators.
Arun Verma,PSPCL director of distribution, said: We had no choice but to shift to this arrangement. We had imposed three day weekly offs on industries, but they are asking for more power supply. With this arrangement industries can work for 11 hours, six days a week and we can provide relief to domestic consumers during the night.
The decision comes just days before a joint forum of industrialists were to start a protest against PSPCL,power cuts and tariff hike from August 6. The industries on mixed-land are however still dissatisfied. Badish Jindal,President of Federation of Punjab Small Industries Association (FOPSIA) said,PSPCL has played a smart game of divide and rule. This was an attempt to weaken the strength of the protesters. It also shows how much they are concerned about small scale units working in mixed-land use areas.
United Cycles Parts and Manufacturers Association (UCPMA) has, however, welcomed the new arrangement and thanked PSPCL for reducing the industries weekly offs.
