NGO says illegal admissions in GNDE,PTU marks enquiry

The Punjab Technical University has marked an enquiry to investigate admissions at the Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College last year after an NGO alleged that there had been irregularities.

The Punjab Technical University (PTU) has marked an enquiry to investigate admissions at the Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College last year after an NGO alleged that there had been irregularities. Based on the complaint filed by the NGO,Universal Human Rights Organisation,PTU has set up a three-member committee, comprising of the technical director,PAU professor Dr S S Hundal and S S Walia, deputy registrar,PTU,to look into the allegations.

While the Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College attained autonomous status on August 17,the inquiry was marked on August 14. The college has also been identified as a First quality Improvement Programme (QIP ) Centre by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for its PhD programmes.

Satnam Singh Dhaliwal, president of UHRO,who had raised the issue of admissions in the college however, said: “Our organisation had submitted a detailed complaint to the PTU vice-chancellor,in which,we have listed anomalies regarding admissions to various streams in the past 2 years. A student had also moved the High Court last year and was later given admission. There must be other students who may have been ignored.”

When The Indian Express contacted GNDE Director Dr M S Saini,he expressed ignorance of the PTU enquiry regarding allotment of seats in the college. “Negative forces are spreading false propaganda and we have already filed defamation cases against them. I am open to any enquiry,” Saini said. PTU Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajneesh Arora, was not available for comments. PTU authorities, however, confirmed that an enquiry had been ordered.
