The Punjab Police is set to register a case against three former and two serving Vigilance Bureau officials after an inquiry report indicted them of abusing power in arresting a patwari (land revenue official) and subjecting him to inhuman treatment in custody.
The case will be registered against the five Shiv Kumar (former vigilance SSP,Patiala),Banarsi Dass (former vigilance SP,Moga), Surinder Pal Singh (ex-officer),Jaspal Singh (SSP,vigilance,Ferozepur) and sub-inspector Sangrur Isher Singh on Wednesday based on the orders of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
The alleged role played by SSP Moga,Surjit Singh Grewal in the case will also be probed. However, his name will not be among the list of accused in the FIR likely to be registered in Patiala.
Earlier,Badal ordered the registration of a case on the basis of an inquiry report that found the five men guilty of abusing power in arresting Mohan Singh,a patwari, and subjecting him to inhuman treatment in police custody.
The Patwar Union had alleged that following orders of senior Vigilance Bureau officers,Mohan was arrested from his residence on February 18,2012 and implicated in a false case. They further alleged that whole operation was orchestrated by the then SSP (Vigilance),Patiala,Shiv Kumar Sharma, from whom the patwari had demanded an official fee of Rs 20 to hand over the copy of a land record in 2009.
Since then, the report said,Sharma carried a grudge against the patwari and got him framed in two cases. The patwari,it said, had also brought to the notice of the government, property worth crores procured by Sharma in and around Patiala. Sources said that the VB has been asked to inquire into the allegations.
