The police are on the lookout for three eunuchs who allegedly duped an elderly couple in Malad and fled with cash and jewellery worth Rs 80,000. The money included Rs 50,000 that advocate Ashok Sarogi had reportedly given the couple.
According to the Malad police, the incident occurred on November 1 last year. However,it came to light only in July when Sarogi asked the couple for his money, the police said. The couple then narrated the incident to him. When Sarogi asked the couple to register a complaint, they refused saying they were scared, the police said. Sarogi then wrote to the police.
We found a CCTV recording showing the eunuchs entering the couples house, based on which we registered a complaint, said sub-inspector Manohar Herpude.
The Malad police said that the complainants,Jayanti Prasad Garg (75) and his wife Meena (65),stay with their daughter Sangeeta (45) and granddaughter Jyoti (17) in a first-floor flat in the Veena Nagar Co-operative housing society at Chincholi Road in Malad (West). Their house is next to Sarogis flat, where his son and domestic help reside.
The officers said on the day of the incident, three eunuchs rang the Gargs doorbell, asking for water. One then pretended to be suffering from migraine and requested to be allowed in for a while,he added. The three told the couple that their house was possessed by an evil spirit, said Herpude.
The eunuchs suggested that the Gargs get whatever cash and jewellery they had as well as sindoor and other material to ward off the spirit, the police said. The couple brought out the cash and gold jewellery. The eunuchs pretended to perform rituals and told the couple that they will have to take the valuables and cash to a temple. They suggested that Sangeeta accompany them, the police said. As they were leaving the building, they allegedly asked Sangeeta to stay back. The three, however, never returned, the police said.
