Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the yawning gap between promise and action of his government had slowed down the growth trajectory of the country.
“The usual rhetoric of Prime Minister Modi did no good to the country. The BJP came to power at the Centre promising ‘acche din’, however, contrary to its promise it has indulged in self-aggrandisement. As a result, the Modi government is fast losing its popularity,” Gogoi, in a statement issued here said.
Gogoi said that the BJP had “failed” to get a majority in elections in Maharashtra, won by a single seat in Haryana and suffered major defeats in Delhi and Uttarakhand within months of coming to power at the Centre.
“Even when the ‘honeymoon’ period was not over, the BJP failed to get clear majority in Maharashtra; in Haryana it managed to win by only single seat and in Delhi the party faced the drubbing while in Uttarakhand it suffered yet another defeat,” Gogoi said. “In Vanarasi which is Modi’s own den, the BJP lost in local body elections,” he added.
Gogoi said that the Modi government was fast losing ground because of its “failures” to deliver the promises despite spending crores of rupees in advertisements. “In spite of spending crores of rupees of tax-payers hard-earned money in attention-grabbing advertisement in print and electronic media, the Modi government is fast losing ground because of its failure to deliver promises,” he said.
Gogoi particularly pointed at the promises like bringing back black money stashed abroad, crediting every account holder’s bank account with Rs 15 lakh each, and deporting illegal foreigners from Assam, and said these and other major issues have been put on the back burner in Modi’s agenda of action.
“Unemployment has hit the all-time high in the country, with no initiative of the Centre in creating employment avenues and prices of essential commodities including pulses are skyrocketing,” the Assam chief minister lamented.
Pointing to Modi’s tall claims of paying attention to the Northeast, the Assam chief minister said the region has been meted out with very shoddy treatment. “Denial of Special Category Status to the Northeastern states, keeping the North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy suspended, not releasing funds under the Ministry of DoNER for flood management in Assam, are some of the instances of the Centre’s hollow promises that failed to see the light of the day,” Gogoi said.
