National Sports Day: Hope sports and sportsmanship always shines in our society, says PM Modi

The Prime Minister also paid tributes to the legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated all sports lovers across India on the occasion of National Sports Day and expressed hope that sports and sportsmanship will always shine in the society. The Prime Minister also paid tributes to the legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand.

On the eve of National Sports Day, the Prime minister met Rio Olympic champions silver medallist P V Sindhu, bronze medallist Sakshi Malik and gymnast Dipa Karmakar at his residence in New Delhi on Sunday. He also met ace shooter Jitu Rai, Khel Ratna awardees, Dhyan Chand awardees, Dronacharya awardees, and Tenzing Norgay awardees.

Later after the meeting, the Prime Minister tweeted that every Indian is proud of them, adding that a major role in the success of every athlete is the perseverance of their coaches.

On Sunday, the Prime Minister began his 23rd edition of  the Mann ki Baat programme by offering his tributes to the hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand, ahead of his birth anniversary which is celebrated as ‘National Sports Day’ throughout the country.

“I offer my tributes to Dhyan Chand ji and wish to remind you all about his invaluable contribution,” PM Modi said.

“He played a pivotal role in helping India win Hockey Gold Medals in Olympic Games of 1928, 1932 and 1936. All of us cricket lovers know Bradman’s name very well. He had complimented Dhyan Chand ji by saying that ‘he scores goals like runs’. Dhyan Chand ji was a living example of sportsman spirit and nationalism,” he added.
