Flames engulf the office of the Prothom Alo newspaper after it was torched by protesters in Dhaka. (AP)The Bharatiya Janata Party Tuesday described the recent overthrow of Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina government and the subsequent targeting of minority Hindus as a “well-planned conspiracy”, calling it the work of those who “couldn’t digest India’s progress”.
Sunil Sharma, BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in the J&K Legislative Assembly, told the media that while it was unclear who was behind the anti-India protests in Bangladesh, it appeared to be “a well-planned conspiracy by some countries who unable to digest India’s fast pace of progress in the race to become a global power”.
The remarks come days after hundreds of protesters rallied in Bangladesh over the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi at a Singapore hospital this week. A prominent figure in last year’s protests against the Hasina government, Hadi had been a vocal critic of India, where the embattled prime minister, who was given a death sentence in November, fled.
This also comes days after the lynching of a Bangladeshi Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, who was beaten to death and set on fire following allegations of blasphemy.
Meanwhile, members of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association held a demonstration against Das’s killing in Jammu, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene.
“We condemn the repeated attacks and killings of Hindus in Bangladesh,” said Bar Association President Nirmal Kotwal. “Either ensure their protection there, or bring them to India.”
Protests were also held by right-wing organisations in places such as Rajouri and Kishtwar, and markets were shut down at various places.
