Making a big push for investment in Madhya Pradesh at the Global Investors Summit in Bhopal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Monday that the state had “every possibility, every potential, to become one of the top five states in the country in terms of GDP as well”.

Modi, who was speaking on the first day of the investor summit in Bhopal, said textiles and tourism were two of the biggest industries in India in terms of employment generation.

“The textile sector in India employs crores of people….and Madhya Pradesh is, in a way, India’s cotton capital. Around 25 percent of India’s organic cotton supply comes from Madhya Pradesh. MP is also the largest producer of mulberry silk in the country. Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees from here are hugely popular and have been given GI tags…Seven large textile parks are being built across the country for the textile sector, one of which is in Madhya Pradesh,” he said, adding that tourism infrastructure around the state’s tribal areas and around the Narmada River “has seen tremendous development”.

“By January 2025, around 2 lakh electric vehicles have been registered in MP, reflecting nearly 90 percent growth,” he said. “MP’s vast rail network is also being modernised. The rail network in MP has been 100 percent electrified. Madhya Pradesh has a road network of over 5 lakh km. MP’s industrial corridors are being connected to modern expressways, ensuring rapid growth in the logistics sector,” he said.

MP, Modi claimed, is a “power surplus state”, that has “created over 10 lakh jobs in the clean energy space. MP has greatly benefited from this energy sector boom as well”. Thirty percent of the state’s power generation capacity of around 31,000 megawatts is clean energy, he said.

He also credited the “double-engine” Bharatiya Janata Party governments at the Centre and the state with much of Madhya Pradesh’s development, saying: “The same MP where buses couldn’t even run properly due to bad roads is now one of the leading states in India’s EV revolution”. He also claimed that the pace of the state’s development “seems to have doubled since 2023,” when the new Mohan Yadav government was voted to power.

“The central government is working shoulder-to-shoulder with Madhya Pradesh for the state’s — and India’s — development. During the elections, I had said that we would work three times faster in our third term. We are seeing this speed even in the first 50 days of 2025,” he said.
