An FIR has been registered against eight final-year engineering students of a government-aided university in Kanpur for allegedly ragging and assaulting three of their juniors on the terrace of a hostel, police said.
The complainants, all third-year students, had gone to the seniors’ hostel after being invited to a birthday celebration, the police said.
Nawabganj police station SHO Deenanath Mishra said an investigation is going on in the matter and no arrests have been made yet. The complainants did not sustain serious injuries and their condition is stable, he said, adding that the university is also conducting an inquiry on its own into the incident.
According to the police, one of the complainants said when they went to the hostel terrace where the party was taking place, the eight suddenly appeared and demanded that they (third-year students) remove their clothes. When the three refused, the accused began verbally abusing and assaulting them with sticks and an iron rod, it was alleged. The assailants also tried to strangle one of the complainants, but the situation was deescalated after the intervention of other seniors, they claimed.
The case was filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The UP Prohibition of Ragging in Educational Institutions Act, 2010 was also invoked by the police, it is learnt.
